Letter of Application

By

A letter of application, also known as a cover letter, is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience.
A letter of application typically provides detailed information on why are you are qualified for the job you are applying for. Effective application letters explain the reasons for your interest in the specific organization and identify your most relevant skills or experiences.
Your application letter should let the employer know what position you are applying for, why the employer should select you for an interview, and how you will follow-up.
When writing an application letter you should include:

  • First Paragraph: Why you are writing - mention the job you are applying for and where you found the listing.
  • Middle Paragraph(s): What you have to offer the employer - mention why your skills and experience are a good fit for the job.
  • Last Paragraph: Say thank you to the hiring manager for considering you and note how you will follow up.
example:
Do not under estimate the importance of writing a job application letter. Each job application letter should be personalized. Keep each job application letter professional & simple (no more than one page consisting of three to four paragraphs).

Dear Mary:
I am writing to apply for the position of manufacturing engineer that was advertised in today's XYZ Times. As you will note from my enclosed CV, I have experience with a wide range of programming languages through academic projects and part-time employment.
"In this section of your job application letter highlight information relevant to the description of the advertisement of the position that you are applying for. So, show the skills and expertise that you have that match the description of the job you are applying for. "
I have demonstrated excellent people skills in addition to strong writing and analytical skills. I believe my education, skills and experiences fit your requirements, and I am confident my skills would be an asset to your company (or to your client if you are applying to a recruiter)
I am available to meet with you at a time that's convenient to you. Please contact me to set up a time. I look forward to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
your signature (not needed when sending via email or for an online job application letter)
Your name
Your contact phone number.
If the advertisement you are applying to asks for your salary expectations, we suggest you add a sentence in your job application letter that your salary expectations are "negotiable" & to be more prepared for salary negotiations, see our salary negotiation example.

Strong & Weak Forms

In connected speech, many of the ‘small’ words we use very frequently tend to take on a different ‘shape’ from the one listed in the dictionary. All of these words belong to the category of function words, i.e. they are words that have little semantic content of their own, but tend to have more grammatical or referential function in relating content words or higher syntactic units to one another. Function words are essentially closed class words, such as pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, auxiliaries, etc. Below, you’ll find a table listing these words, together with their strong or dictionary form, as well as their potential weak forms. The following tables are based on Roach, 2000, with slight modifications/additions.
In general, weak forms do tend not to occur in sentence-final position or in contrastive/emphatic use.
